Project Details: Londonderry Kitchen Remodel
This Londonderry Colonial was in deep need for renovation. The kitchen was dark and sad feeling. Thereat of the house was inviting and bright, a sunny feeling, not so, the kitchen. This room cried out for renovation. There was no where for family or guests to sit, and no room to cook. This active family needed a better space to entertain, and hangout as a family, as well as something that better fit with the rest of the homes’ design.
Special Design Features:
I utilized the wall to better seat guest and family with a built in seating area flanked by a base organizational cabinet, under the phone, for papers, files, and miscellaneous desk items, and a tall pantry suitable for the snacks, baking items, and dry goods. The organic shaped in the center became the counter height table with seating for four. Underneath the seating area more storage was created with a diagonal lazy susan base.
Removing the section of wall that stood next to the fridge opened up the entire hall area and kitchen. The refrigerator is now in a better location near the family room and outdoor entertaining patio, as well as being easier for non-cooks in the kitchen to access it. The corner range was the final major design solution in this space. Putting the ranger into the corner allowed us to create two separated work areas. Storage was also greatly improved with this seemingly simple design solution. The long wall left by the absence of the refrigerator allowed for huge wall cabinets. Two larger drawers’ banks were placed on either side of the range, with a pullout unit to the right of the range for cooking oils and tall spice bottles. With the new stove location a focal point was created that really shines as you look in from the family room. This new kitchen has a functional, spacious and friendly layout.
